The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–15 NIV) is not just a prayer but a profound guide to communicating with God. It is the Lord’s way of teaching us how to pray—a crucial aspect of our spiritual journey. Let’s take comfort in this powerful guide to our prayer life.
There is a way to present our problems to God. If you study the Psalms of prayers or how the prophets or godly men addressed God in the Old Testament, you will discover that they all did it in the same way—and it is what Christ summarized for his followers. The Lord’s Prayer refers to types of prayer, not a particular prayer.
In Matthew 6, Jesus instructs us on how to pray:
Do not pray to a man or a woman, for Christ himself said, “In that day (Christianity), you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.” (John 16:23, 25–27 NIV) So, ask in His Name (John 16:24 NIV), not on His Name, nor by His Name nor Through His Name, for we are in Him.” (John 14:20 NIV)
Unless a grain of wheat dies, it cannot yield much grain. (John 12:24 NKJV) Christ’s death yielded glory. The blood of Jesus is more powerful than the blood of Abel the righteous. (Hebrews 12:24 NIV) His sacrifice (blood) is so powerful that it yielded a powerful name (John 16:23 NIV)
The blood was used at repentance to set us free (Revelation 12:11 KJV), but in Christianity (morning), His Name is used to glorify Him. Christianity symbolizes the morning because we triumphed in the morning. (Exodus 12:22 NIV)
Just as it was for the sacrifice of the Passover (Exodus 10 NIV), the blood is not used in the morning (Christianity), for it represents the sacrifice that set us free so that we can live in His Name. Hence, there is no prayer like “I cover you under the blood of Jesus” or “I cover my family and friends in His Blood.” His blood means His sacrifice. No unbeliever can be covered under His blood except at repentance. All believers were made alive (covered) by His blood (Revelation 12:11 KJV) but live in His Name. The type of prayer where you cover people, things, etc., under the blood of Jesus is not in the Bible. We were asked to pray in His Name (John 16:23 NIV) because we live in His Name. So, ask, prophesy, command, protect, etc., in His Name.
The following are types of prayer. Godly men prayed using these types of prayer. They usually appear in the order listed below in a complete prayer session, but we should pray according to how the Spirit leads us.
Thanksgiving Prayers
These include praise and worship.
Petition and Intercession Prayers
This type of prayer may also include scriptural quotations.
Argumentative Prayers
This prayer means denying what is evident to grasp the unseen through faith-based arguments. Faith-based arguments are a powerful tool in our spiritual arsenal, empowering us to pray confidently for the unseen.
Confession of Faith
This type of prayer is based on the concept that we are co-heirs to God’s throne and that, by faith, all things are ours. We declare that the answer belongs to us and continue to speak it into existence.
Testimony Prayers
In this type of prayer, we recount God’s goodness (testify about it) in our lives. Sometimes, when we reflect on God’s goodness in our lives, we will find the strength to hope in difficult times and pray more.
This was the problem with the Israelites in the desert. Many didn’t take the time to reflect on how awesome He was, so they kept complaining. That is why, when we read the books of Exodus and Numbers, our first impression is, “Are these people alright? How could they not believe in Him?” It is because we have the whole picture in front of us. Let’s take the time to reflect and be inspired by His goodness.
Testimony prayers are not a type of thanksgiving prayer. In a practical prayer session, they follow the thanksgiving prayers and prepare the way for the argumentative prayers.
Declaration Prayers
This type of prayer involves speaking or declaring predictions about what we are praying for—what we hope to see. The Rhema, the creative word of God, is within us because of our connection to Christ.
Rhema is a Greek word that means “utterance” or “spoken word.” It refers to the specific, personal, and timely word God speaks to a believer. So, we should make prophecies (Revelation 11:5–6 NIV).
We are all born with the ability to prophesy because a king in God is also a prophet, as written when Saul was seen prophesying: “And who is their father?” (1 Samuel 10:12 NIV).
However, some of us have gifts (Spirits) or the ministry of prophecy.
Lord, I thank you for your grace in my life. You have never failed me.
In difficulties, you made a way.
Thank you for putting me through school, paying my tuition, and allowing me to gain new knowledge and skills. It’s due to Your grace.
Thank you, Lord!
You said in Your Word, “By the sweat of your brow, you will eat food.” So, I am looking for a job.
I say “no” to laziness. I pray for a new job. May doors of opportunities be opened to me in the Name of the Living Jesus.
I also pray for Joan, Jason, Ambe, and Aunt Miranda, who are currently unemployed. Lord, I pray for your ever-loving kindness in their lives. Bless them with a new job each, according to Your will. You are the God of all things. Everything belongs to You. The hearts of job recruiters are in Your hands. You channel favor to whom You will. I believe in Your grace.
I put an end to this joblessness in our lives in the Name of Jesus.
As we proceed with our applications, please lead us to job opportunities.
I trust in God and declare that I have a new job. I am not lazy; no one shall take what is rightfully mine. I know that my defender lives. Joblessness shall not prosper against me.
I have seen Your mighty hand in action, and my case shall not be different. You blessed my sister, Jane, with a job when all hope was gone. You made a way for my father to pay for our studies when he lost his job. When my family and I had no money for house rent and could barely feed ourselves, You rescued us. You were our only hope, and You stood for us. Thank you, Lord.
Today, it shall not be different. I reject poverty in my life. Poverty is for the lazy people. May Your favor lead me to find a good job. I also pray for the right attitude during job interviews. You are the God of the needy. You are merciful to those who call on You with Faith. I believe You have answered me, for You said, “Before I call, you will answer; while I am still speaking, you will hear.” I call unto You, Lord—come quickly. Hear me when I call in Jesus’ Name.
I pray for the salvation of my neighbor Stephanie and her family. I pray that You open her eyes to see the truth. Lord, rend the heavens as in Acts 2; let Your Spirit convince them of sin. May all justifications they find for living in sin be confronted in the light of Your Glory.
I pray for Clara, who betrayed me. I pray that You forgive her, for I have forgiven her. May You be merciful to those who hurt my family and me today. Give me wisdom to avoid evil and cunning people. Deliver me from the snare of the Fowler. I pray for discernment.
Lead me not into temptation but hide me from what is bigger than me. Lead me through calm waters. Let all storms be far from me and those that are mine.
Your word says, “Even if a thousand fall at my side, ten thousand at my right hand, it will not come near me.”
I also pray for my local church. May You give more grace to Pastor Wilbert. I pray against the spirit of division and fornication in our church assembly. May our lives genuinely reflect Your will.
I believe You have answered me. Thank you, Lord, for responding to my prayers. May Your Name be forever praised. May the unbelievers also know the grace and love You share with us in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
The palm above contains all the various types of prayers. Can you identify them?
