The essence of prayer is the sincere concern and yearning for something. It is the trust we have in God for an answer. This heartfelt concern is what true prayer is all about and holds great power. Throughout his life, Christ carried this burden. It was so heavy that it caused him deep sadness, and he prayed, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but your will.” (Mark 14:36 NIV) The “cup” refers to the suffering, not the sacrifice. (Matthew 20:22–23 NIV) He came to Earth for that sacrifice. This burden caused him such distress that his sweat was like drops of blood while praying. (Luke 22:44 NIV)
The spirit of prayer is our deep concern for the topics we pray about. It reflects the hope we carry within us. No matter how difficult things become, we must keep that flame of hope alive. As long as it burns, angels are fighting on our behalf. We don’t always need to speak; our spirit communicates through that burden. This was evident in the Old Testament when Moses raised his hands prophetically. (Exodus 17:11–13 NIV) As long as his hands were raised, the Israelites were conquering. These raised hands symbolize hope. We must maintain hope no matter what happens. These “raised hands” are an expression of Faith. So, we must focus on where our help comes from. (Psalms 121:2 NIV) This is what is referred to as “the Spirit of Prayer.”
The spirit of prayer is a potent tool. It transforms us into walking embodiments of prayer, empowers us before God, and influences many aspects of life. When a child is deeply troubled, even without speaking a word, it touches the parents’ hearts. God is more compassionate than humankind. (Luke 11:11–13 NIV)
This burden is not like worldly worries or sadness but an unwavering cry from the spirit, and God will answer. It is written, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 NIV)
